NHBS exists to support science and conservation by supplying wildlife and environment books and equipment. Everything we do is focused on that and these core values are why we are in business. We also support conservation through the Gratis Book Scheme, by encouraging and helping our staff to take part in volunteer schemes and through our distribution and affiliate services.
The Gratis Book Scheme was set up in 2002 by Prof William Sutherland to provide essential conservation books to students and researchers in developing countries, who would otherwise be unable to obtain them.
The scheme is a collaboration between the British Ecological Society (who pay for the postage), NHBS (who co-ordinate the scheme), the publishers (Oxford University Press, Wiley-Blackwell, Cambridge University Press) and the authors of the books (who provide the books for free). Since the scheme began, over 5,000 books have been donated to students and researchers in 137 countries.
We regret that gratis books are not available to students currently doing degrees in Western Europe, North America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand or to students from these regions who are working elsewhere in the world.
NHBS staff are passionate about wildlife and conservation. To help them to get involved with local volunteer schemes, we encourage all staff members to apply for up to three days of paid time during each calendar year which they can spend on a practical conservation project of their choice. To date, members of our team have been involved with bat monitoring, Bioblitz weekends, educational events for local families and rehabilitating marine mammals. You can follow their adventures on our blog, the Conservation Hub

NHBS supports a large number of conservation organisations and publishers by providing an efficient and reliable distribution service for their publications. We currently act as the distributor, agent or main stockist for over 160 wildlife, science and conservation publishers including The Ray Society, BirdLife International, RSPB, The Mammal Society, British Trust for Ornithology, Bat Conservation Trust, Wetlands International and Conservation International.
We are proud to work alongside Butterfly Conservation and Buglife to host their online shops. By providing this service to these vital organisations, their members and supporters have the chance to purchase a wide range of books and equipment whilst also raising funds for their charity of choice. If you are a charity or NGO and are interested in our affiliate scheme please email us for further information at firstname.lastname@example.org
