Mechanism for maintaining tropical tree diversity
New research suggest that the diversity of tropical rainforests tree species is maintained by natural enemies. This model states that species-specific natural enemies such as fungi and arthropods in the soil restricts local recruitment of saplings near conspecific adults, promoting biodiversity.
Speciation in hybrid zones
Genetic data obtained from two species of howler monkey have helped scientists explain how speciation can arise in a hybrid zone. The genetic differences between the two species is greater within the hybrid zone than between geographically separated populations, providing evidence that hybridisation is strongly selected against in species cross over areas.

Different dialect in pilot whale population
Research into the Hawaiian population of Short-finned Pilot Whales has demonstrated that groups have different vocal dialects. This discovery may aid conservation efforts as researchers can gain a deeper insight into the whales’ complex social structures and behaviours.
