Britain's Mammals 2018
Last week, the Mammal Society published their review of the conservation and population status of British mammals, the first comprehensive study of mammal populations since 1995. In it, they highlight the disturbing state of Britain's mammals, a fifth of which face a high risk of extinction over the next decade.

Britain's Mammals 2018: The Mammal Society's Guide to their Population and Conservation Status, summarises the key findings from the review. Based on more than 1.5 million individual biological records, it provides the best available assessment of population size, geographical range, temporal trends, and future prospects of all 58 British terrestrial mammal species.
Interview with Faith Anstey, author of Start to Identify Grasses
Faith Anstey is the author of the recently published Start to Identify Grasses and other plant ID books. Her easy-to-use guides provide a great introduction to plant identification, and show beginners how to identify the family to which a wildflower or plant belongs.

To mark her new book and to encourage more people to discover the botanical wonders around them, we asked Faith a few questions about her writing and her life-long passion for botany. To read the full interview, see our recent blogpost on the Hoopoe.
National Insect Week 2018
This week is National Insect Week! Organised by the Royal Entomological Society, this biennial event aims to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to learn more about insects and the vital roles they play in almost every ecosystem on earth.
To celebrate National Insect Week hundreds of events will take place throughout the UK, ranging from Bioblitz days, insects walks, workshops and even the chance to dine on edible insects. Find out more in our blogpost

A recent study recording the migratory patterns of the Painted Lady butterfly, Vanessa cardui, has found that they can travel distances of up to 12,000km, often crossing the Sahara Desert twice. To date, this is the longest migratory flight known in butterflies.

First white-tailed eagle in 140 years hatches in Orkney
