2019 Big Farmland Bird Count

The 2019 Big Farmland Bird Count (BFBC) will take place from 8-17 February 2019

Nature lovers across the UK are being urged to take part in this event, now in its sixth successive year. The survey aims to determine which farmland birds are thriving due to good conservation efforts while identifying the ones in need of most help. The BFBC website has a free ID guide along with a downloadable count sheet and all it takes is half an hour of your time.

Darwin’s finches theory challenged
New research suggests that the link between beak morphology and feeding ecology may not entirely explain beak variation evolution. Although a link between feeding ecology and beak morphology was identified, variations may also be influenced by other functional trade-offs, such as singing, preening and fighting.

Diversity boosts coral health
Marine Biologists have demonstrated that lower coral species richness alone can suppress the growth and survivorship of multiple species of corals, under field conditions. The findings highlight the positive role of biodiversity in the function of coral reefs, and how coral species loss may trigger further ecosystem decline.

Microplastics in Marine Mammals
Fifty individuals from 10 species of marine mammal that have washed-up in Britain contained microplastics. Over 80% of the microplastics found consisted of synthetic fibres, typically originating from clothes, fishing nets and toothbrushes. Although found in relatively low concentration, the impact of microplastics of marine megafauna is not yet understood.

New Books at NHBS
This A5 booklet aims to simplify the identification of the commonest British sedges and rushes by using field characters, rather than microscopes and complex keys.
This third edition of Birds of Bhutan has been completely revised, featuring concise text and detailed maps opposite superb plates, covering every species, plus most vagrants, that regularly occur in Bhutan.
The second edition of this beautiful field guide for divers has been updated and reorganized to include 185 new species, numerous changes to the taxonomy of these organisms and an up-to-date classification.
This monograph is based on 15 years of research and conservation work by researchers and lays out the basic biology of the Red-footed Falcon, Falco vespertinus.
Origins explores the vast architecture of causal links, chains of consequences that explain why things are the way they are; finding the deep roots behind everyday realities such as why most of us eat cereal for breakfast.
Equipment Highlight
This Nest Box with Camera Kit contains all you need to observe nesting birds in your garden: a camera ready nest box made from FSC timber, along with a choice of three cameras depending on how you wish to transmit and receive images.
