Interview with Stefan Buczacki, author of Earth to Earth: A Natural History of Churchyards
The unique features of churchyards mean that they offer a valuable niche for many species. Enclosed churchyards in particular provide a time-capsule and a window into the components of an ancient British landscape.
In Earth to Earth, well known botanist, mycologist and broadcaster Stefan Buczacki presents us with a passionate call-to-arms for the future conservation of this vital habitat.
We recently chatted with Stefan about his book and his views on churchyard conservation.
Head over to the NHBS blog to read the full conversation.
British Wildlife Magazine soon to be in its
30th Year
Now published by NHBS
Since its launch in 1989, British Wildlife has established its position as the leading natural history magazine in the UK, providing essential reading for both enthusiast and professional naturalists and wildlife conservationists. There is no other publication that offers such high-quality, authoritative, well-researched and accessible articles on such a wide range of subjects.
Published bi-monthly, each issue has 84 information-packed pages. There are several in-depth articles in each issue, covering diverse subjects. Written by top experts, these articles provide a unique opportunity for naturalists and wildlife conservationists to keep abreast of new discoveries and the latest trends.
The NHBS Guide to UK Amphibian Identification
The UK is home to seven native species of amphibian. Over the winter, these frogs, toads and newts have all been hibernating, but it will soon be time for them to venture out to their breeding ponds and pools.
In our recent blogpost we provide you with some of the key characteristics of each species which will help you to identify exactly what you’re looking at. For those of you who are keen to find out more, we have also provided a list of field and identification guides.
Global fishing now tracked in near real-time
Using a combination of satellites and ship-tracking technology, researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara have been able to monitor global fishing at a resolution which is hundreds of times higher than was previously possible.

Toxic amphibian threatens Madagascan wildlife
The arrival of the Asian common toad ten years ago has spelled disaster for much of Madagascars’s wildlife. Counter-measures such as eradication trials have so far proven to be largely ineffective and there are growing concerns for the biosecurity of the island.

Svalbard Seed Vault now contains more than a million seeds
Now ten years old, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has recently received a shipment that has taken the number of seeds it contains to over a million. New additions to the vault include the rare Estonian onion potato as well as barley used to brew Irish beer.

New Books at NHBS
Capturing the intoxicating beauty of these rare flowers, Orchid Summer is an exploration of their history, their champions, their place in our landscape and the threats they face.
This new Poyser Monograph is the result of a personal quest by author Martyn Stenning to bring recent discoveries about the blue tit together in one accessible volume.
Field Guide to Amazonian Bats provides an essential tool, not only for researchers, but also for bat conservationists, consultants and anyone interested in Neotropical and Amazonian bats.
This fully revised edition of Phylogeny and Evolution of the Angiosperms provides an up-to-date, comprehensive overview of the evolution of and relationships among these vital plants.
Equipment Highlight
The Compact 20W Skinner Moth Trap is easy to assemble and packs flat for storage. It is powered by mains electricity and comes with everything you need to start trapping.
Fauna Corner
Neither a typical field guide nor an exhaustive reference, American Snakes is instead a fascinating study of the suborder Serpentes. Full of intriguing and unusual stories as well as gorgeous full-colour images.
Flora Corner
Volume 5(2) is the latest volume of Flora Mesomericana, the first major regional flora ever written in Spanish. The Flora describes, for the first time, all the vascular plants growing in the southeastern most states of Mexico.
